Crypto brief: October 15, 2026

Bitcoin, ether, and solana all printed lower as this Thursday session opened. Our market snapshot at 00:13 UTC on October 15, 2026 had Bitcoin at $81,655, down 2.03% over 24 hours, ether at $2,421.60, and Solana at $104.27. Listed crypto market cap sat near $2.77 trillion, with bitcoin dominance about 59.3%. See the Bitcoin history and Ethereum history hubs for how those ranges have traded.

The overnight pile was treasury filings and forum notes, not a new U.S. rule. Strive bought 2,822 bitcoin after a $369.2 million warrant exercise. Bitmine said its ether stack reached 6.03 million tokens. USBC lifted a bitcoin-backed loan line with Payward. Aave, Magicians, Ethresear, Compound, and Kraken fill out the rest of this crypto news brief. For DeFi terms used below, start at the DeFi glossary.

Yesterday’s October 14 brief still has Strategy’s 250-bitcoin add and Cipher’s proposed notes. For how we timestamp these prints, see how to read a crypto market snapshot.

  1. Strive exercises remaining PIPE warrants and buys 2,822 bitcoin

Strive's October 14 8-K says 273,493,909 traditional warrants to purchase 13,674,703 Class A shares were exercised from October 12 through October 13, 2026, for expected gross proceeds of $369.2 million. As of close of business on October 13, no traditional warrants from that PIPE remained outstanding. In the same two-day window the company bought 2,822 bitcoin at an average price of about $83,266, inclusive of fees and expenses. That print sits beside its October 13 weekly 8-K, which had 32,773 bitcoin as of October 9 after a 3,311-coin add at about $84,500.

  2. USBC lifts a Payward bitcoin-backed loan line from $25 million to $40 million

USBC's October 14 8-K says it signed a Second Addendum to its March 18, 2026 Master Loan Agreement with Payward Interactive on October 12. The addendum raises the aggregate borrowing commitment from $25.0 million to $40.0 million, and that commitment expires twelve months from the October 12 effective date. $21.0 million was outstanding, leaving $19.0 million available, subject to borrowing conditions and collateral tests. Bitcoin collateral is held with Payward Financial, and an account-control amendment lets that collateral also secure certain digital-asset derivative trades, with liquidation rights if the margin shortfall is not cured.

  3. Bitmine reports 6.03 million ETH, or 4.9% of supply

Bitmine's October 12 press release, furnished with an October 13 8-K, puts holdings at 6,028,946 ETH as of 1:30 p.m. ET on October 11, priced at $2,544 per token on Coinbase. That is 4.9% of a 122.1 million ETH supply, plus 214 BTC, $612 million of cash and marketable securities, and a $16.2 billion total that also includes other crypto and equity stakes the company labels moonshots. Staked ETH stood at 5,067,309, or about $12.9 billion at that same $2,544 print. The company said it bought 12,532 ETH over the prior week and remains short of its stated 5% accumulation target.

  4. Aave files an ARFC to list native BTC collateral via Babylon vaults

Babylon Labs posted an Aave Request for Comment on October 14 to activate native bitcoin as collateral on Aave V4 through Trustless Bitcoin Vaults. The plan adds a Babylon Spoke, where native BTC is the only collateral, and a BTC Vault Swap Spoke, with the first use case borrowing stablecoins against BTC locked in a Taproot UTXO rather than a wrapped token or a custodian. A Temperature Check already passed, risk parameters still come from Aave's risk providers, and qualifying protocol fees would send the first $500,000 each year from launch entirely to the Aave DAO. Babylon said its staking protocol currently holds about 40,772 BTC, or roughly $3.37 billion.

  5. Magicians draft ERC-8443 Quantum Bridge Shield with hash-based committee signatures

Quantova Inc posted an Ethereum Magicians draft on October 14 for an ERC that would let a bridge accept a cross-chain batch only after a committee signs its Merkle root with LMS hash-based signatures under RFC 8554. The write-up cites NIST IR 8547's window to deprecate quantum-vulnerable signatures from 2030 and disallow them after 2035, and it measures LMS W4 verification at height 10 at a mean 204,807 gas. A later reply sets height 20 as the recommended default, about 1,048,576 leaves, and says a used leaf signed twice freezes that key. Every root waits at least 60 seconds, hybrid mode can pair each LMS signature with ECDSA during a migration, and this remains a draft interface, not a scheduled Ethereum fork.

  6. Ethresear splits Rapidblocks execution proofs so they outlive state

An October 14 Ethresear post by cskiraly extends the Rapidblocks pipeline published the day before. Execution proof Π_T shows that a block's transactions, run on its declared inputs, produce its outputs, and it names no state root. Separate Merkle proofs tie those inputs and outputs to state roots, so Π_T can stay valid across slots when later state changes miss the same reads. The input rule replaces the prior Hist rule so a skipped block can take down only blocks that read what it changed, and this remains a research draft for pipelined slots, not a scheduled hard fork.

  7. Compound Foundation maps Institutional Comet onto an optimistic governance council

An October 8 Comp.xyz post from Compound Foundation, Woof, and the Governance Working Group answers Proposal 608, which asked for a plan to put the Institutional Comet under COMP-holder control. Administration would move from today's multisigs to an optimistic council whose proposals COMP holders can veto, with a full specification promised before the end of October. As of October 8, the USDC market on Ethereum had about $20.6 million supplied against $36.2 million of collateral, with $16.3 million borrowed, or 79% utilisation. Two multisigs (a 3-of-4 governor and a 4-of-7 proxy owner) plus the 5-of-9 Pause Guardian run that market today.

  8. Kraken schedules 15-minute derivatives maintenance at 07:00 UTC

Kraken's status page lists Derivatives Platform Maintenance from 07:00 to 07:15 UTC on October 15, about 15 minutes of unavailability, then a post-only period while checks finish. The notice covers the derivatives user interface, REST, Websocket, FIX, single sign-on, and cross-exchange transfers, plus the matching MTF components. This window is separate from the spot website and API work listed for 07:01 UTC the same morning. Traders who need to change derivatives orders should do that before 07:00 UTC, not during the pause.
