Bitcoin is still a range tape. Overnight, the work is in filings and fee-market research, not a breakout. As of 00:33 UTC on August 19, the site market snapshot put Bitcoin at $64,583, up 0.7% over 24 hours, with Ethereum at $1,916.30 (up 0.7%) and Solana at $76.93 (up 1.8%). Global crypto market cap sat near $2.29 trillion, and bitcoin dominance was about 56.6%.
The SEC proposed Regulation Crypto Assets, Super League is taking 2,100 bitcoin from Metaplanet, and Cypherpunk is buying a Zcash fleet it puts at about 18% of network hashrate. US spot bitcoin ETFs added $297.5 million on August 17 after last week’s outflows, while Kraken opened US stocks for EEA clients, BitBox shipped a security firmware, and an Ethereum Foundation intern mapped Glamsterdam data-gas. For Bitcoin history, the range still is the story. US stablecoin NPRM context is in Mira Chen’s GENIUS NPRM reaction.
SEC proposes Regulation Crypto Assets with $5 million and $75 million exemptions
On August 18 the SEC proposed Regulation Crypto Assets, a pair of Securities Act exemptions for crypto investment contracts: a one-time raise of up to $5 million over four years, and raises of up to $75 million in each 12-month period with financial statements and ongoing reporting on top of the narrative disclosures required in both lanes. The package also adds a conditional safe harbor from investment-contract status and would preempt state securities registration for those offerings and some secondary trades. Comments would run 60 days after Federal Register publication (proposing release 33-11434, file S7-2026-27). This is a proposal, not an adopted rule.
Super League takes 2,100 bitcoin from Metaplanet and plans a Superplanet rename
Super League Enterprise (Nasdaq: SLE) said it signed August 18 subscription agreements with Metaplanet Holdings, a Florida unit of Japan's Metaplanet Inc., and Cayman-based Evo Fund, under which Metaplanet would receive 44,859,400 common shares at $3.00, 100 shares of convertible perpetual preferred stock, and four ten-year warrants covering up to 381 million shares at $3.00 to $33.50, while Evo would receive two-year warrants on up to 10 million shares at $3.00 to $5.55. Closing consideration is 2,100 bitcoin, priced off Coinbase at 4:00 p.m. New York time on August 14, plus $2.5 million cash. Super League expects to rename itself Superplanet Inc., close in the fourth quarter of 2026 subject to stockholder approval, and become a Nasdaq controlled company with Metaplanet holding about 95.7% of common shares under a five-year lockup, plus a right to invest up to $210 million more in junior preferred stock over 24 months.
Cypherpunk buys a Zcash fleet it says is about 18% of network hashrate
Cypherpunk Technologies (Nasdaq: CYPH) filed an August 17 asset purchase with Moria Mining and Winklevoss Treasury Investments at a $33,333,333 price, paid as a pre-funded warrant for 43,290,042 shares with a $0.001 exercise price. An August 18 exhibit says the fleet is already online at about 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash hashrate, or about 18% of the Zcash network, and names Kevin Zhang as head of mining. Cypherpunk said it holds 323,394.38 ZEC (about 1.92% of circulating supply) against a 5% target, and it estimated miner rewards near 43,800 ZEC a month, or about 1,440 ZEC a day; those hashrate and reward figures are the company's.
Kraken opens 7,000-plus US stocks to eligible EEA customers
Kraken said on August 18 that eligible customers in the European Economic Area can now trade more than 7,000 US-listed stocks under its MiFID II authorization, in the same account as more than 700 xStocks (tokenized US equities it says are backed one-for-one and transferable to self-custody) plus more than 600 crypto assets. Trading is on Kraken Pro desktop and mobile and the Kraken app, commission-free for eligible EEA customers. Kraken called itself the only crypto-native venue offering regulated US stocks and tokenized versions of the same names in one EEA account, with access still gated by local eligibility.
BitBox 9.26.5 firmware patches severe Multi-edition and silent-payment bugs
Shift Crypto's BitBox blog posted Dixence firmware 9.26.5 after an internal review that also used frontier AI models. A bootloader issue that could trick users into installing malicious firmware was already fixed in Oeschinen 9.26.2 on BitBox02 devices (BitBox02 Nova was not affected), while Dixence patches a Multi-edition memory-corruption bug on unset wallets used with a malicious host and a silent-payments bug that could lock coins to an unintended address. Bitcoin-only firmware does not contain the memory-corruption code, BitBox said it has no reports of exploited funds or damaged seeds, and it told users to update to 9.26.5. That is a <a href="/glossary/self-custody/">self-custody</a> patch, not a chain halt.
US spot bitcoin ETFs add $297.5 million on August 17
Farside Investors' full US spot bitcoin ETF table shows a $297.5 million net inflow on August 17, the first complete session after the August 14 print of a $56.2 million outflow. BlackRock's IBIT added $160.2 million, Fidelity's FBTC added $111.9 million, ARK 21Shares' ARKB added $14.2 million, and Morgan Stanley's MSBT added $11.2 million, with the other listed funds at zero. The August 18 line was still incomplete overnight, with dashes on IBIT, FBTC, and several other tickers, so it is not a finished flow print.
EF intern maps how Glamsterdam BALs would burn data gas under EIP-7999
On August 18, Fei Wu posted an Ethereum Foundation internship note on ethresear.ch about data metering under a draft of EIP-7999, where EIP-7928's Glamsterdam block-level access lists still sit outside fee accounting. The open spec would meter execution, data, and state separately while runtime BALs consume data gas, creating a two-way coupling: more execution and state write more BAL bytes, and a higher data base fee then taxes the activity that created those bytes. Using a February 1 to May 31, 2026 anchor, Wu put runtime BAL at about 1.92 million of 4.05 million data-gas units per block (47.4%), static data at 2.13 million (a 1.807 multiplier versus EIP-7623), and a 6,000-block sample near 119.9 kB of runtime BAL per block. This is research on an open spec, not a scheduled hard fork; beacon-node operators still need the separate <a href="/lighthouse-v8-2-2-patch-ethereum-beacon-nodes-now/">Lighthouse v8.2.2 patch</a>.
Krak Card launches in the US with up to 2% cashback in dollars or bitcoin
Kraken said the Krak Visa debit card is live for US customers as of August 18, 2026, with up to 2% cashback in US dollars or bitcoin paid after settlement, no monthly or annual card fee, and free deposit rails. Users can spend from dollars and more than 600 other assets, including bitcoin and USDC, and set the order those balances are used at checkout. The card spends Kraken balances rather than issuing a new onchain dollar, and this launch post limits eligibility to the United States.
