Crypto brief: September 19, 2026

Bitcoin jumped while miners, DeFi forums, and a client release did the talking. The CoinGecko snapshot fetched at 00:24 UTC on September 19, 2026 put Bitcoin at $81,009, up 6.20%. Ether was $2,612.73, up 7.16%. Solana was $112.90, up 11.80%. Global market cap sat near $2.79 trillion, bitcoin dominance about 58.3%, and 24-hour volume about $131.2 billion.

Canaan mined 44 bitcoin in August, sold its remaining ether, and bought back ADSs. HIVE’s BUZZ HPC unit named a Canadian applied-AI partner. Compound paused, then restored, withdrawals on a deprecated Linea USDC market. Uniswap filed a Temp Check to turn on protocol fees on Circle’s Arc. Aave Risk Stewards posted cap and rate tweaks. Paradigm shipped Reth v2.6.0. Researchers sketched an encrypted mempool that is not a spec. Kraken closed a same-day Ethereum ERC-20 withdrawal delay.

The tape sits next to Bitcoin history, Ethereum history, and Solana history. Pair the DeFi notes with DeFi, layer 2, and liquidity.

  1. Canaan mines 44 bitcoin in August and sells its ether stack

Canaan Inc. posted an unaudited August mining update in a September 14, 2026 6-K. The company mined 44 BTC, held non-JV installed hashrate at 10.05 EH/s, and put JV installed hashrate at 4.92 EH/s (4.11 EH/s operating). It sold its entire 3,952 ETH position plus 54 BTC at average prices of about $2,400 per ETH and $79,000 per BTC, generating about $13.9 million in cash, then repurchased about 13.6 million ADSs (about 16.4 million year to date). Month-end holdings were 1,868 BTC and 0 ETH, with average all-in power cost of $0.043/kWh, and installation started at a Canadian compute heat-recovery project.

  2. HIVE's BUZZ HPC partners with ProCogia for Canadian sovereign AI

HIVE Digital Technologies furnished a September 16, 2026 press release as Exhibit 99.1 on an 8-K filed September 17 (Item 7.01, a designated news release). Through BUZZ HPC, HIVE said Vancouver-based ProCogia will procure dedicated GPU capacity from BUZZ HPC Canadian data centers and run its ZeroBoxx AI framework plus vertical products CallYeah and PolyKode on that stack for clients in Canada, the United States, and Europe. The companies also plan a joint go-to-market outside Canada. Executive Chairman Frank Holmes described a 400 MW coast-to-coast Canadian pipeline. The 8-K says the exhibit is furnished, not filed under Section 18.

  3. Compound pauses then restores a deprecated Linea USDC market

Compound Foundation posted on September 18, 2026 that it was pausing withdrawals on the deprecated Compound III USDC market on Linea as a precaution after identifying a potential issue. The post said the pause supported remediation as the market winds down, did not reverse deprecated status, and that no other Comet or Compound markets were affected. A follow-up at 23:49 UTC the same day said the market had been unpaused and full functionality restored. The forum post does not name the potential issue.

  4. Uniswap Temp Check would turn on protocol fees on Circle's Arc

A September 18, 2026 Uniswap Temp Check asks to extend protocol-fee collection and UNI burns to Circle's Arc, after fees went live on Ethereum and eleven other chains. The post says Arc mainnet went live September 16, 2026, and that Uniswap v2, v3, v4, and UniswapX were deployed at launch. Under the UNIfication expedited path, fee-parameter updates skip RFC and go to a five-day Snapshot then an onchain vote. Protocol-fee infrastructure contracts on Arc will be deployed in the coming days before that onchain vote. This is a Temp Check, not a live fee switch.

  5. Aave Risk Stewards propose cap and rate changes across five V3 markets

LlamaRisk posted a September 18, 2026 Risk Stewards note recommending Aave V3 parameter changes. On Ethereum Core, it would raise the wstETH borrow cap from 7,000 to 14,000 after 6,956 borrowed against 7,000, or 99.4% cap utilization. On Base, it would cut WETH Slope1 from 2.50% to 2.30% and lift optimal utilization from 90% to 92%, matching a TokenLogic WETH rate note. Other recommendations: double the Mantle USDe supply cap to 40 million, raise X Layer USDC Slope1 from 4.00% to 4.50%, and lift Horizon USCC supply cap from 5.6 million to 7.5 million. These are steward recommendations dated 2026.09.18, not a claim that every market already moved.

  6. Reth v2.6.0 ships Hegotá plumbing and tighter newPayload times

Paradigm released Reth v2.6.0 on September 17, 2026. The tag expands Amsterdam and Hegotá protocol support, installs REST-SSZ Engine API routes by default, and advances EIP-8189 snap-sync work. On a 300 million gas BAL workload, storage-trie job parallelism cut mean newPayload latency 8.6% and state-root wait time 39%. Defaults now persist 50 blocks with 30 state-masking blocks and 100-block backpressure. Update priority is Low for payload and non-payload builders. Operators who read the database out-of-process are told to disable partial persistence.

  7. Ethresear.ch sketches encrypted mempools without batch decryption

A September 18, 2026 Ethresear.ch post sketches an encrypted Ethereum mempool that uses threshold identity-based encryption without batch decryption. A FOCIL-like on-chain ticket would pin execution to a future block, then the sender encrypts to the ticket block's blockhash so plain threshold IBE can work. The design adds a two-block delay and a circuit breaker that can turn the encrypted mempool off. The authors say they know of no threshold IBE scheme that meets their requirements, including post-quantum security, and call the post a design sketch, not a spec.

  8. Kraken resolves a same-day Ethereum ERC-20 withdrawal delay

Kraken opened an incident at 07:48 UTC on September 18, 2026 for delays on the Ethereum ERC-20 funding gateway. The status page said withdrawals may be delayed and that all other funding methods were operating normally. Impact was tagged minor. The incident moved to monitoring at 09:07 UTC after a fix, then resolved at 10:45 UTC the same day. Kraken did not publish a root-cause note on the incident page.
