Support and resistance

Support and resistance are price zones where buying or selling has repeatedly shown up. Support is where dips often meet bids. Resistance is where rallies often meet offers. They are history of participation, not magic lines drawn once and worshipped forever. Zones break, flip roles, and get redrawn when the market proves a new balance of supply and demand with real size behind the move.

Why it matters

Traders use these zones to plan entries, exits, and invalidation without pretending the future is known. A bounce at support with rising volume is different from a quiet wick that prints and dies. A rejection at resistance with heavy selling is different from a thin poke above a line. Pair the levels with liquidity and time of day so you do not treat empty books as destiny or treat every touch as a guaranteed reversal.

Broken levels can become the opposite side of the trade. Old resistance that holds as support after a clean break is a common map update. The reverse happens on failed breakouts when price reclaims the zone and trapped traders exit. The useful question is not whether the line is sacred. It is whether the next reaction confirms the new role with size and follow-through.

In crypto, weekend gaps and thin alt books make false breaks common. Mark zones from multiple touches and higher-timeframe closes, then let lower timeframes fill the execution detail. That habit keeps range trading honest when headlines urge you to rename every bounce as the start of a new cycle.

Example

An asset rejects the same upper band three times on rising volume. A trader fades the fourth approach, places invalidation above the zone, and stops treating the band as resistance only after a decisive close holds outside it. If the break fails and price falls back through the zone on volume, the map flips again and the trader updates risk instead of arguing with the tape. The chart did not predict; it organized risk around observed supply.
