A crypto wallet is software or hardware that manages keys and helps you create addresses and sign transactions. It does not hold coins the way a physical purse holds cash. Balances live on the blockchain. The wallet proves you are allowed to move them. Hot and cold designs differ mainly in how exposed those keys are to the internet.
Why it matters
Wallet choice is a risk allocation. Browser extensions and mobile apps are convenient for daily DeFi and payments. Hardware devices push signing offline for larger savings. Custodial apps blur the line by showing a balance while a company holds the keys. Knowing which model you opened matters more than the brand logo on the icon.
Most retail losses around wallets are operational. Wrong network sends, fake support chats asking for seeds, malicious token approvals, and cloned download pages beat exotic zero-days for volume. A wallet UI can look calm while asking you to sign a drain. Read what you approve. Keep spending money and savings in different setups when size justifies the friction.

Wallet brands change faster than custody principles. Whatever app you open, ask three questions: who holds the seed, what network am I on, and what exactly does this signature spend or approve. If you cannot answer those, the wallet is not ready for size even if the interface looks polished.
Example
You install a mobile wallet, fund it with a small USDC test, and connect to a known app. The wallet shows a signature request that spends an unlimited token allowance. You reject it, re-check the URL, and only approve a limited amount you intend to use. The wallet did its job as a signing tool. Your judgment still decided whether the keys authorized a safe move.
