Crypto brief: August 26, 2026

Overnight the tape cooled, and filings outran a finished ETF print. On the site CoinGecko snapshot fetched at 00:14 UTC on August 26, 2026, Bitcoin was $78,388, down 0.8% over 24 hours. Ether was $2,438.51, down 1.7%. Solana was $96.46, down 4.5%. XRP was $1.43, down 4.0%. Global market cap sat near $2.64 trillion, bitcoin dominance was about 59.2%, and 24-hour volume was about $104.4 billion.

Treasury launched a Quantum-Readiness Task Force with a digital-assets workstream. Fed discount minutes kept primary credit at 3.75%. Soluna signed a 28 MW Bitdeer co-mining deal. BTCS borrowed another $10 million USDT on Aave. Ethereum Foundation researchers flagged Glamsterdam gas repricing. Aave Labs filed a Direct-to-AIP to list BTC.b on V4 Ethereum. A Magicians draft ERC sketched on-chain bonds. Kraken will pause Cardano deposits and withdrawals for 24 hours from 08:00 UTC.

The range sits next to Bitcoin history and the stablecoin rails BTCS used as proceeds. Ethereum history is the Glamsterdam side of this brief. Watch exchange status pages next to the candles, and keep liquidity in view if a Cardano rail stalls.

  1. Treasury launches a quantum-readiness task force with a digital-assets workstream

On August 24, 2026, the U.S. Treasury announced a Quantum-Readiness Task Force after Executive Order 14412. The public-private group will run three workstreams: Sector Alignment and PQC Transition, Third-Party and Vendor Readiness, and Digital Assets and Emerging Technology Risk. Treasury said the task force builds on the G7 Cyber Expert Group roadmap for post-quantum cryptography. This is a coordination plan, not a new listing and not a live protocol change.

  2. Fed discount minutes keep primary credit at 3.75% after two banks asked for 4%

The Federal Reserve Board on August 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. EDT released minutes of its July 20 and July 29 discount-rate meetings. On July 20, directors at ten Reserve Banks wanted to keep the primary credit rate at 3.75%, while Cleveland and Minneapolis asked for 4%. The Board kept 3.75% and, on July 29, also left interest on reserve balances at 3.65% after the FOMC held the federal funds target at 3.50% to 3.75%. These minutes sit beside the already-published July FOMC minutes and do not change the live policy setting.

  3. Soluna and Bitdeer sign a 28 MW co-mining deal at Project Kati 1

Soluna Holdings said on August 25, 2026, that a subsidiary will host about 28 MW of Bitdeer bitcoin miners, about 1.93 EH/s, at Project Kati 1 in Willacy County, Texas. Deployment is slated to begin in September 2026 and ramp in batches, with Bitdeer, through Dory Creek, LLC, owning Sealminer A2 Pro Air machines. Soluna will supply the site, power, and operations, and the parties will share mining proceeds. Kati 1 is an 83 MW wind-powered site, and Soluna cites 192 MW already in operation plus 14 MW still under construction there.

  4. BTCS borrows another $10 million USDT on Aave against 46,531 ETH

BTCS Inc. told the SEC that on August 21, 2026, it borrowed an extra $10.0 million USDT on Aave, taking total Aave borrowings to about $53.0 million, collateralized by about 46,531 ETH worth about $112.6 million at $2,420. There is no fixed maturity, and the loan can be liquidated if the health factor falls below one, using an ETH liquidation threshold of about 80%. The extra borrow printed a variable rate of about 3.98% a year. Proceeds went into more ETH and USDC for Imperium liquidity pools, and the board still caps loan-to-value at 50%.

  5. Ethereum Foundation flags Glamsterdam gas repricing risk for a small set of contracts

On August 24, 2026, Ethereum Foundation Protocol Research, EthPandaOps, and Specifications teams said Glamsterdam gas repricing can break or degrade a small set of smart contracts. EIP-8037 and EIP-8038, both scheduled for inclusion, raise the cost of creating and accessing state so gas tracks real work after state growth since the 2021 Berlin fork. Replay of historical mainnet transactions found most contracts unchanged, and many flagged cases fix with a higher gas limit. Contracts that hardcode stipends, gasleft() branches, or presigned gas limits can still fail, so builders can check the Foundation repricing-impact page and test on Platåberget.

  6. Aave Labs files a Direct-to-AIP to list BTC.b on V4 Ethereum

On August 25, 2026, Aave Labs posted a Direct-to-AIP to onboard BTC.b to the Aave V4 Core Instance on Ethereum. BTC.b is a bridged bitcoin representation on Lombard infrastructure, already listed on Aave V3 Core and on Aave V4 Core on Avalanche, at address 0xB0F70C0bD6FD87dbEb7C10dC692a2a6106817072. Risk parameters are still due from Risk Service Providers, and the on-chain AIP has not yet been the vote. Aave Labs said it has no paid relationship with Lombard Finance, so this remains a listing proposal, not a live Ethereum V4 market.

  7. Magicians draft ERC IBond sketches zero-coupon bonds that pay without a holder transaction

On August 25, 2026, an Ethereum Magicians thread floated IBond, a draft ERC-20 interface for zero-coupon bonds. The design aims to pay at maturity and burn the token without the holder sending a transaction, closer to a brokerage payout than a claim function. The author says a proof of concept mirrored the roughly $7 trillion fixed-rate U.S. Treasury market and estimated about $300 to run a 10-year note on Base with 20 coupons for 2,500 holders. This is a draft interface, not a live Ethereum feature and not an adopted ERC.

  8. Kraken schedules a 24-hour Cardano deposit and withdrawal pause from 08:00 UTC

Kraken scheduled Cardano gateway funding maintenance from 08:00 UTC on August 26, 2026, until 08:00 UTC on August 27, 2026. ADA deposits and withdrawals will be unavailable for about 24 hours, and transfers sent during the window are supposed to process after the work finishes. Trading is not described as halted. The incident was still in scheduled status overnight, before the 08:00 UTC start.
