Crypto brief: October 13, 2026

Bitcoin, ether, and solana all printed lower as this Tuesday session opened. Our market snapshot at 00:25 UTC on October 13, 2026 had Bitcoin at $81,358, down 2.85% over 24 hours, ether at $2,422.04, and Solana at $104.05. Listed crypto market cap sat near $2.75 trillion, with bitcoin dominance about 59.3% and 24-hour volume about $85.9 billion. See the Bitcoin history and Ethereum history hubs for how those ranges have traded.

The overnight document pile was not a new U.S. rule. Cipher Digital stretched its Barber Lake HPC lease to 20 years. Hyperion DeFi repaid Avenue Capital and sold HYPE. Bitmine said its ether stack is now 6.02 million tokens. On the protocol side, Lighthouse shipped a withheld-detail mainnet security patch, Compound posted live Institutional Market numbers, Lido’s NEST still has not bought LDO, and Magicians opened a post-quantum stealth-address draft. Coinbase is investigating delayed Celestia sends. This crypto news brief leads with those filings and posts, then a venue note. For DeFi terms used below, start at the DeFi glossary.

  1. Cipher stretches Barber Lake to a 20-year, $9 billion lease stack

Cipher Digital (NASDAQ: CIFR) said on September 24, 2026 that Cipher Barber Lake LLC amended its HPC lease with Fluidstack USA II Inc. and, at the same time, signed a binding commitment with an unnamed leading AI lab for a follow-on 10-year lease. That package extends the contracted term at the Colorado City, Texas site to 20 years and is expected to add about $5.2 billion of contracted revenue, lifting the facility from $3.8 billion to over $9 billion. Data halls are now due between the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, with first rent in Q4 2026. Cipher will bear the first $359.3 million of costs above the original budget; the tenant reimburses 50% of overages after that as additional rent over the 20-year term.

  2. Hyperion DeFi repays $8.6 million Avenue loan and sells 200,000 HYPE

Hyperion DeFi (NASDAQ: HYPD), formerly Eyenovia, filed an 8-K dated October 2, 2026 saying it voluntarily repaid about $8.6 million on September 28 and terminated its November 22, 2022 Avenue Capital loan, which had allowed up to $15.0 million in term loans. The company said it funded the payoff with HYPE token sales and cash, with no early-termination penalty, and that all related liens were released. In the three months ended September 30, 2026 it sold 200,000 HYPE and HYPE liquid staking tokens and, net of dispositions and staking rewards, held 1.85 million Gross HYPE plus about $14.5 million in cash, cash equivalents, and USDC. A furnished October 2 press release also said it had bought 240,124 HYPD shares at a $3.21 weighted average and had about 15,442,482 shares outstanding as of September 30.

  3. Bitmine says its ether stack is 6.02 million tokens, or 4.9% of supply

Bitmine Immersion Technologies (NYSE: BMNR) said as of 6:30 p.m. ET on October 4, 2026 it held 6,016,414 ETH, priced at $2,726 on Coinbase in the release, plus 214 BTC, $643 million of cash and marketable securities, a $180 million Beast Industries stake, and $117 million of Eightco (NASDAQ: ORBS). The company put crypto plus cash, marketable securities, and those moonshot holdings at $17.4 billion and said the ether stack was 4.9% of a 122.1 million ETH supply. It also reported 5,067,309 staked ETH, called $13.8 billion at that $2,726 print, and said it bought 15,112 ETH over the prior week. The 8-K is an Item 7.01 Regulation FD disclosure of the October 5 press release, not an audited balance sheet.

  4. Lighthouse v8.2.3 is a medium-priority mainnet security patch

Sigma Prime shipped Lighthouse v8.2.3 (Kirkland Meeseeks) on October 1, 2026 at 02:15 UTC as a medium-priority mainnet release that contains fixes for security vulnerabilities and is recommended for all mainnet users. The notes withhold the security details to give users time to upgrade, and they tell Sepolia operators to run v8.3.0-rc.0 instead. Staking users get a Medium beacon-node priority and a Low validator-client priority. A known data-column backfill out-of-memory issue, especially on Gnosis, is fixed in the rc and is not unique to the 8.2.x line.

  5. Compound V4 monthly: Institutional Market clears $60 million of deposits

The Compound Foundation September 2026 V4 monthly, posted October 12, 2026, says core V4 specs are done and smart-contract implementation and reviews have started, with overall status On track. The Institutional Market, a V4 research deployment, launched September 8 and by September 25 had passed $60 million in total deposits and collateral with more than $18 million in USDC loans outstanding. A September 29 update said borrowing demand had grown nearly 10% that week and USDC suppliers were earning a 6.35% base rate at that time. Gate Earn went live in September, the compound.finance site redirected to a new site without touching existing positions, and Q3 engineering headcount went from one to six.

  6. Lido NEST has bought no LDO; a post asks to cut the 2027 budget to $30 million

An October 7, 2026 Lido research post says NEST has been live since August 10, 2026 and has not bought a single LDO, with the budget counter at -$542,451 at the end of September. The author argues that parameter tweaks will not fix it and asks the DAO to cut the Foundations 2027 budget to about $30 million, roughly 30% below the current $43.8 million, and to set the NEST threshold equal to that approved budget. The attached model says buybacks start to grow from about a 20% cut, near $35 million, and that a 30% cut roughly doubles them versus today. The post also flags $6.06 million of Kelp-related costs as material off-budget spending and asks that NEST-bought LDO not be used for contributor payouts.

  7. ERC-8441 draft adds a post-quantum scheme to Ethereum stealth addresses

An October 9, 2026 Ethereum Magicians draft, ERC-8441, specifies ERC-5564 stealth-address schemeId 3 as a hybrid of ML-KEM-768 and secp256k1 ECDH. The payment secret hashes both shared secrets so a later quantum computer cannot, if ML-KEM-768 holds, tell from the public announcement log who was paid. Spending stays on ordinary secp256k1 externally owned accounts, using the deployed ERC-5564 announcer and ERC-6538 registry with no new contract. The meta-address is 1,250 bytes, and the announcement ephemeral public key is 1,121 bytes.

  8. Coinbase investigates delayed Celestia sends and receives

Coinbase Status opened Celestia - Delayed Sends and Receives at 15:24 PDT on October 12, 2026 (22:24 UTC) and still listed the incident as investigating, with impact none. The first update said users were seeing delayed Celestia sends and receives while buys, sells, and fiat deposits and withdrawals were not affected. Coinbase said it was investigating and that funds were safe. This is a live venue note, not a reported chain halt.
