Crypto brief: September 8, 2026

U.S. cash desks were closed for Labor Day, so Tuesday’s tape leaned on protocol notes and venue status pages. The CoinGecko snapshot fetched at 00:15 UTC on September 8, 2026, Bitcoin was $79,019, down 1.6% over 24 hours. Ether was $2,487.32, down 1.2%. Solana was $103.72, down 2.6%. Global market cap sat near $2.68 trillion, bitcoin dominance about 59.1%, and 24-hour volume about $73.3 billion.

The Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster posted its first unified Hegotá EIP tier list, with FOCIL locked as the consensus-layer S item. LlamaRisk asked Aave to lift USDC and GHO caps and to nudge USDe rates. GitHub has EIP-8411 in draft for chunked payload gossip. Coinbase closed a futures and prediction-market lag in 36 minutes, and Kraken restored PEAQ deposits after a morning delay.

The tape sits next to Bitcoin history, Ethereum history, and Solana history. Read the Aave and Spark notes next to DeFi and stablecoin, the Hegotá grades next to gas fees, and the Coinbase and Kraken incidents next to how to check exchange and withdrawal status.

  1. EF Protocol publishes a unified Hegotá EIP tier list

The Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster published its first combined Hegotá grade sheet on September 7, 2026, covering 62 proposed EIPs with 397 individual grades from 16 contribution templates. EIP-7805 FOCIL is the locked-in consensus-layer S-tier headliner, unanimous S on seven grades, and the post says it should ship with EIP-8369 VOPS profiles. A companion priorities note sets a December 2029 target for quantum-resistant L1 across execution, consensus, and data, and treats a 2030 Q-day as a planning assumption until a January 2027 review. Geth still plans to ship its own standalone list.

  2. LlamaRisk lifts Aave V3 USDC and GHO caps after a Labor Day review

LlamaRisk's September 7, 2026 Risk Stewards note raises the Aave V3 Core USDC supply cap to 3,000,000,000 and the borrow cap to 2,700,000,000 after utilization hit 92.4% on supply and 95.7% on borrows (2,153,878,518 of 2,250,000,000). USDe would see a 1% higher base rate and a 1% lower Slope1 on Core, Plasma, Monad, Mantle, and Avalanche. On Monad, GHO caps rise 50% to a 60,000,000 supply cap and a 54,000,000 borrow cap, while syrupUSDC and USDe supply caps fall. Prime wstETH sits at 61,996 of a 62,000 supply cap, with 80,000 proposed, and X Layer USD₮0 is fully drawn on the borrow side at a proposed 90,000,000 cap.

  3. EIP-8411 drafts chunked gossip for larger execution payloads

GitHub pull request 12299, opened September 4, 2026 and still in draft review, adds EIP-8411 to replace the single execution_payload gossipsub topic from EIP-7732 with an execution_payload_chunks topic split into 64 chunks. The builder would commit to the chunk set with a Merkle root, payload_chunks_root, inside the execution bid so each chunk can be checked with one bid signature plus a depth-6 inclusion proof. The draft, created September 5, 2026, says larger payloads from higher gas limits make full-message gossip slow to cancel and slow to forward. The pull request remains open and unmerged.

  4. Lido seeks a contingent $1.5 million LDO CEX market-making mandate

Lido Ecosystem Ops asked the DAO on August 31, 2026 to authorize a contingent centralized-exchange liquidity mandate funded from the treasury, up to a $1.5 million recallable LDO facility (about 4,000,000 LDO at $0.37 per token) plus up to 480,000 USDC in retainers and related costs. The authorization would sit unused for up to two years unless the Growth Committee judges LDO pair liquidity insufficient, then run for up to 12 months from activation. The post says the goal is two-sided liquidity and listing continuity, not a price target, and that a later Snapshot can end the mandate. Disbursement would use Easy Track motions to the Liquidity Observation Lab where possible.

  5. Coinbase restores futures and prediction-market trading after a 36-minute lag

Coinbase reported degraded performance for some users trading futures or prediction market contracts starting at 12:11 PDT on September 7, 2026, and said funds were safe. Identified, monitoring, and resolved updates all posted at 12:47 PDT, 36 minutes after the investigating note. The status page does not name a root cause beyond latency on those desks. Spot buys and sells were not listed as affected.

  6. Kraken restores PEAQ deposits after a two-hour funding delay

Kraken opened an investigation into the PEAQ funding gateway at 03:03 UTC on September 7, 2026, warning that deposits and withdrawals could be delayed. The incident was marked resolved at 05:29 UTC, about two hours and 26 minutes later. The status page does not publish a chain-level root cause. PEAQ trading other than funding is not described as paused.

  7. Spark SAEP-20 rewrites Morpho vault cancellation for Vaults v2

Phoenix Labs posted SAEP-20 on September 7, 2026 to amend Spark's Risk Curation Framework so Morpho Vaults v2 cancellation uses the Sentinel role instead of the v1 Guardian, and to add the Curator as an authorized canceller. The draft would add the Sentora RLUSD Morpho Vault on Ethereum mainnet to the approved instance list after a Snapshot from August 31 to September 3 passed with 629,278,903 For and 0 Against. Atlas pull request 318 remains open and marked not to merge unless the associated proposal passes. The amendment also corrects the Spark Blue Chip USDT Morpho Vault contract address and relabels Guardian parameters as Cancellation Authority.

  8. Optimism moves Mode, Metal, Zora, and Dust admin keys back to Conduit

An off-cycle maintenance proposal posted September 2, 2026 asks the Optimism Security Council to return L1 ProxyAdmin, DisputeGameFactory, and L2 ProxyAdmin ownership of Mode (chain ID 34443), Metal (1750), Zora (7777777), and Dust (55378) to Conduit Safe 0x4a4962275DF8C60a80d3a25faEc5AA7De116A746. Those keys currently sit at 0x5a0Aae59D09fccBdDb6C6CcEB07B7279367C3d2A. OP Labs gave 30-day written notice on July 30, 2026 that security monitoring and upgrade support would end, and Dust was deployed with the Council holding keys by mistake. The post says SuperchainConfig is not transferred and that Mode, Metal, and Zora would leave Optimism governance in the Superchain Registry after execution.
