Crypto brief: August 18, 2026

Bitcoin bounced with stocks overnight, but the structure of the tape still matters more than one green candle. As of 00:16 UTC on August 18, the site market snapshot put Bitcoin at $64,377, up 2.5% over 24 hours, with Ethereum at $1,908.98 (up 2%) and Solana at $75.94. Global crypto market cap sat near $2.29 trillion, and bitcoin dominance was about 56.5%.

The overnight filings are the story. Austria’s FMA posted a legally binding 70,000 euro MiCA fine against Bitpanda. Strategy left its 840,447 bitcoin stack unchanged while lifting a $4.80 billion dollar reserve. Bitmine said its ether treasury now covers 4.8% of supply. HIVE signed a five-year, about $350 million AI cloud contract. Harmony recovery scripts point to a planned shard rollback after last week’s forged mint. Deel says its DLUSD wallet is live in more than 80 countries. Kraken added Mesh deposits from Coinbase, and Coinbase is investigating delayed Ethereum sends.

For bitcoin range context, see Bitcoin history. Overnight policy on who may issue US stablecoins is in Mira Chen’s GENIUS NPRM reaction.

  1. Austria fines Bitpanda 70,000 euros in a published MiCA case

Austria's Financial Market Authority on August 14 published a legally binding 70,000 euro fine against Bitpanda GmbH for Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) breaches. The FMA said Bitpanda did not send a crypto-asset white paper at least 20 working days before publishing it, then ran marketing that lacked the required white paper, a not-approved disclaimer, and a phone number plus email. The notice calls this an accelerated case under Austrian supervisory law. A companion FMA note says it is the first published MiCA penalty of this kind.

  2. Strategy holds 840,447 BTC and lifts its dollar reserve to $4.80 billion

Strategy's August 17 current report said it bought and sold no bitcoin from August 10 through August 16, leaving holdings at 840,447 BTC with an aggregate purchase price of $63.36 billion. The same filing put the USD Reserve at $4.80 billion as of August 16, including ATM share-sale proceeds that had not yet settled. Strategy used $132.2 million of MSTR ATM proceeds to repurchase 1,388,720 STRC preferred shares. For a desk that treats weekly bitcoin buys as the signal, an unchanged stack plus a larger cash buffer is the print.

  3. Bitmine's ether stack hits 5.82 million tokens, or 4.8% of supply

Bitmine Immersion Technologies said that as of 9:30 p.m. ET on August 16 it held 5,815,164 ETH, priced at $1,893 on Coinbase, equal to 4.8% of a 120.7 million ETH supply. The exhibit says the company bought 9,926 ETH over the past week and has 5,067,309 ETH staked, with total crypto, cash, and moonshots at $11.4 billion including $78 million of cash and marketable securities. Chairman Tom Lee put the ETH/BTC ratio at 0.02994 and said Bitmine is 96% of the way to a 5% ether target. That is a treasury print, not a protocol change.

  4. HIVE signs a five-year, $350 million AI cloud contract

HIVE Digital Technologies said its BUZZ HPC unit signed a five-year GPU cloud agreement with an unnamed investment-grade customer worth about $350 million of total contract value and about $70 million of annualized revenue. The cluster is 2,016 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs at Bell AI Fabric in Merritt, British Columbia, with capital spending of about $185 million and an about $35 million customer deposit. HIVE expects the kit live in calendar Q4 2026 and says BUZZ HPC annualized revenue would then sit near $180 million. The customer is not named, so the news is the contract math, not a Microsoft-style counterparty.

  5. Harmony recovery scripts target a shard rollback to pre-mint heights

Harmony core developers merged recovery work that restores shard 0 toward block 92,730,034 and shard 1 toward block 94,978,278, with an August 17 checklist telling validators to stay stopped until a GO signal. The rollback-92730034 scripts pin official binaries and checksums for that window. Last week's forged-mint coverage already explained the empty-bitmap mint bug. This week's GitHub trail is the recovery path: one fixed rollback window, not a selective burn.

  6. Deel says its DLUSD wallet is live in more than 80 countries

Payroll firm Deel updated its stablecoin-wallet post on August 17, saying the product that started in Argentina a month ago is now live for KYC-checked contractors in more than 80 countries across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. Balances are held as DLUSD, which Deel describes as a USD-denominated digital balance meant to track one dollar, redeemable inside the platform, not a bank account and not FDIC-insured. Contractors can opt into promotional Earn rewards with no lock-up. A Deel Card tied to the wallet is slated for later this year.

  7. Kraken adds Mesh deposits from Coinbase, skipping copied addresses

Kraken said it partnered with Mesh so users can deposit crypto from another exchange without copying a wallet address. At launch the flow supports Coinbase, with Mesh SmartFunding able to top up a deposit from other balances on that venue. Kraken says it does not charge a fee, though the sending exchange may, and that it never stores the other platform's password. Mobile support is still coming.

  8. Coinbase investigates delayed Ethereum sends and receives

Coinbase Status at 16:55 Pacific on August 17 said some users may see delayed Ethereum network sends and receives, while buys, sells, and fiat rails stay unaffected. The incident was still listed as investigating, impact minor, with no resolve time posted. Coinbase said funds are safe. Treat it as a venue delay on ETH rails, not a chain halt, until a later update says otherwise.
